Mark Rober’s professional trajectory bridges the gap between high-level aerospace engineering and mainstream digital entertainment. Before becoming a household name on YouTube, Rober spent nine years working as a mechanical engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) from 2004 to 2013. During this tenure, his primary focus was the Mars Curiosity rover mission, where he spent seven years designing and delivering critical hardware. Beyond the Curiosity rover, Rober contributed to several other prominent JPL missions, including the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL), the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite, and Advanced Modeling Technology (AMT) initiatives.
While at NASA, Rober also focused on improving internal communication and knowledge sharing. He served as the primary architect of "JPL Wired," an internal knowledge-capture wiki, or "Intrapedia," designed to facilitate the exchange of corporate knowledge among scientists and engineers. This system streamlined how JPL teams documented and retrieved technical data, earning Rober one of NASA's highest internal honors for his contribution to the agency's operational efficiency.
Following his departure from NASA in 2013, Rober eventually expanded his reach into television production. In August 2025, Netflix announced a multi-project content partnership with Rober, marking a major milestone in his career as a science communicator. This collaboration quickly bore fruit with the release of "Mark Rober's CrunchLabs," a compilation series that aired four seasons between November 2025 and May 2026. The first season premiered on November 19, 2025, followed by Season 2 on January 1, 2026, Season 3 on March 16, 2026, and Season 4 on May 26, 2026. This was followed by "Camp CrunchLabs," an eight-episode reality series released on June 8, 2026. The show featured space-themed science experiments and guest appearances from popular digital creators, including Zach King, Unspeakable, and Matthew Beem.
Rober's partnership with Netflix continues with the upcoming kids and family competition series "SCHOOLED!". Produced in collaboration with Jimmy Kimmel's production company, Kimmelot, the show opened casting in March 2026 for contestants aged 9 to 17. Filming was scheduled for a three-to-four-week window in Los Angeles from June 22 to July 17, 2026, with selected participants receiving a weekly rate of $2,000. Notably, "SCHOOLED!" made history in March 2026 as the first competition series to be awarded a tax credit under the California Film & Television Tax Credit Program.
Through these diverse projects, Rober has successfully translated his background as a NASA mechanical engineer into a prolific career as a television producer and host. By blending rigorous scientific concepts with engaging reality formats, his work with Netflix continues to introduce engineering and space science to a broader family audience.
